2002 Toyota MR2 Spyder, $9,799

I don't know why this never occurred to me before, maybe because it's 138hp. But they're known to fit the long of torso; the roof opens; and it's a five-speed. Plus, it's mid-engine, weighs 2,200 pounds and is RWD.

There's no write-up to speak of at the dealer, so I'll quote Edmunds:

At a dealer in Bridgewater, New Jersey. Clean Carfax, people love them and I think they look cool. A test drive wouldn't hurt, right?

2000 Ford Mustang GT Convertible, $8,000

Lehho is right, the no-convertible scenario is untenable. What you need is an all-weather year round car, one that will give you your top down/power on fix, but at the same time be cheap, cheap to run and nothing you'll feel bad about using up in the salt and over potholes. You need a Mustang GT.

Drivers up to 6' 6" should be comfortable in a 1999-2004 Mustang and the 2000 already gained an inch of seat travel over the previous year, but if legroom is an issue, then there's a well-known seat track mod one can do in an afternoon, that reportedly lets the car accommodate drivers up to 6'10".

The 2000 GT had a limited slip rear end, the 260hp mod 4.6 and traction control--a set of snows and go easy on the throttle, and it should get through everything the 323 does.

Oooh. Sunburst Gold, new for 2000...

At $8,000 and 51,000 miles, this is one of the best-priced comparable cars on the national market; you'd probably expect about $11,500. The seller won't have any trouble moving it. It's in Norwalk, Connecticut--you could swing by on your way to work...
